Burton Joyce Parish Council identified an underused area adjacent to its offices and car park that was no longer serving a purpose. The ambition was to transform this wasted space into a welcoming, functional community hub in time for the village’s Christmas Light Switch-On event.
The new space needed to provide a versatile setting for community gatherings, encourage everyday use, and become a valuable long-term asset for local residents. The project was successfully completed and officially opened on 6th December 2025.
Whiting Landscape delivered a complete hard and soft landscaping solution, transforming the redundant space into a vibrant, flexible area designed for both everyday enjoyment and community events.
Key elements included:
- Resin Bound footpaths for accessibility and durability.
- Metal edgings for a clean, long-lasting finish.
- A bespoke timber canopy to provide sheltered seating and event area.
- Timber planters and new planting areas to introduce colour.
- Newly turfed areas and grass seeding to soften the landscape.
- Installation of street furniture, curved and straight benches, brass rubbing posts, finger post.
- Integrated lighting beneath benches and within the canopy to improve safety and usability after dark.
The completed scheme has transformed the area into an attractive, multi-purpose community space that is enjoyed throughout the year.
Since completion:
- The space successfully hosted the Christmas Light Switch-on event.
- The Parish Council has held numerous community events, including the local School Choir concert & continuous pop-up food fayres.
- The seating areas and landscaped surroundings are now enjoyed daily by residents and visitors.
- The project has significantly increased footfall and community engagement within the village centre.
- The community garden and public space are now available for residents to book for local events and activities.
What was once an unused area beside the Parish Council offices has been transformed into a vibrant community destination. The space now supports local events, encourages social interaction, and provides a safe, attractive environment where residents can meet, relax and enjoy the village throughout the year.
